Tip · Lyrics

Lyrics for every voice, straight from the score.

Do you have the score as MusicXML — from MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale or Dorico? Then Claude can make the lyrics for every voice, ready to put into Choirdinated: split into lines the way Choirdinated itself splits them, with timings and a list of where the sections begin.

A skill for Claude: instructions and a small program that Claude uses when you ask for lyrics from a score. Scores and files you upload to Claude are processed by Anthropic under its terms, not by Choirdinated.

How it works

From the score to the voice mixer.

You add the skill once. After that it is three steps for each piece.

  1. Step 1

    Add the skill to Claude

On claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app: turn on “Code execution and file creation” under Settings → Capabilities. Then go to Customize → Skills, choose “+”, “Create skill” and “Upload a skill”, and upload the zip file. In Claude Code, unzip the file into ~/.claude/skills/.

  2. Step 2

    Export the score as MusicXML

In MuseScore: File → Export … → MusicXML. Either .mxl or .musicxml is fine, and Sibelius, Finale and Dorico have the same under File → Export. A PDF or a picture of the score has no words to read — it has to be made into MusicXML first.

  3. Step 3

    Ask Claude

Upload the file and write, for example: “Make Choirdinated lyrics for all the voices.” Claude tells you which voice each file is for, and points out what looks like a mistake in the score. You get two files for each voice:

    • .txt — the words, line by line, to paste.
    • .lrc — the same words with timings, for recordings exported from the notation program. If the recording has a lead-in before the first beat, say how long it is, and the timings move with it.
  4. Step 4

    Put the words into Choirdinated

Open the voice mixer for the piece in the Score archive and choose “Add lyrics”. Choose the voice under “Voice part”, and open “Paste or import the whole text”. Paste the .txt file under “Lyrics”, or choose the .lrc file under “Import timings from a file”. Add the sections with “Section”, and press “Save”. The choir's score librarian and its owner can put in lyrics.

Did you know?

Make the mix set from the score, and the words come with it.

If you make the mix set straight from the score in Choirdinated (“Make a mix set from the score”), the lyrics are put in by themselves — for every voice, with timings. The tip above is for when you have your own recordings. And a text you paste first gets its timings by itself when you later make a mix set from the same score, as long as its lines are as Claude made them.
